Searches Conducted Across Four Cities
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided 11 locations on Thursday, targeting properties linked to 2005-batch IRS officer Santosh Karnani and his wife, Aarti Karnani. The operation spanned Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Mumbai. Karnani previously served as an additional commissioner in the Income Tax Department.
Allegations of Illicit Wealth
According to the CBI, Karnani amassed wealth far beyond his known sources of income. His wife allegedly helped him purchase assets using those undisclosed funds. The CBI’s FIR claims the couple held unexplained assets worth ₹1.31 crore—over 156% more than their declared income.
Documents, Devices Seized in Ongoing Operation
Investigators seized multiple incriminating documents and digital devices from the properties. Officials confirmed that the operation remains active as they continue examining property records and financial transactions.
History of Bribery and Escapes
Karnani’s name first surfaced in October 2022 during a Gujarat ACB raid at his Ahmedabad office. He allegedly fled the scene after creating chaos during the sting operation. The CBI later took over the investigation.
In September 2023, the CBI filed a separate FIR accusing him of accepting a ₹30 lakh bribe. He reportedly leaked confidential information to help a builder win a case in the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, allegedly receiving discounted land in return.
Investigations Continue
The agency is now analyzing financial trails to uncover more irregularities. Officials believe Karnani used multiple channels to expand his wealth illicitly, prompting a deeper probe into the disproportionate assets case.
