Government Mandates Aadhaar-Based Biometric Checks

In a decisive move to tackle tax fraud, the Uttar Pradesh government has made Aadhaar-based biometric authentication mandatory for all new GST registrations. This rule aims to prevent the misuse of Aadhaar credentials, which has been a growing concern.

New System Becomes Operational Across All Districts

Starting April 14, 2025, GST Suvidha Kendras began operating in every district. These centers now verify applicants through biometric Aadhaar authentication and document checks. The applicant must appear in person, submit all required documents, and complete the biometric process to obtain GST registration.

Previous Loopholes Enabled Fraud

Earlier, biometric checks were part of VAT registration but were removed after GST rolled out in June 2017. As a result, fraudulent registrations using stolen Aadhaar details became more frequent.

State and Central Governments Launch Joint Effort

According to State Tax Commissioner Nitin Bansal, the new system will make GST registration more secure. He noted that the Central Government also launched 25 GST Suvidha Kendras in key districts under the CGST Lucknow Zone. These include Lucknow, Kanpur Nagar, Agra, Prayagraj, and Gorakhpur, along with Hapur and Bulandshahr in the Meerut Zone.

Authorities Expect Major Drop in GST Fraud

Officials believe that enforcing biometric checks at the registration stage will drastically cut down fraud. By verifying each applicant’s identity in person, the government ensures that only genuine applicants receive GST registration.
