ITR Due Date Extension AY 2025-26: What’s the Latest?
As of now, there is no official announcement from the Income Tax Department regarding an extension of the ITR filing deadline for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. Despite the fact that:
- All ITR forms (ITR-1 to ITR-7, including ITR-V and the new ITR-U) have been notified and are available for download,
- E-filing utilities (offline, online, and Excel tools) are currently not functional or yet to be fully released,
the deadline for non-audit taxpayers remains July 31, 2025.
Why There’s No Extension Yet:
- The majority of ITRs are filed in June and July, giving the department time to activate utilities.
- ITR processing has improved, and returns are processed faster than before.
- The current delay may simply be due to technical updates or implementation of changes in the new ITR forms.
What Taxpayers Should Do:
- Download and review the applicable ITR form in advance.
- Gather necessary documents (Form 16, AIS, TIS, capital gains, etc.).
- Check regularly for updates on the Income Tax Department’s official e-filing website.
🔔 Key Reminder: Filing after the due date attracts a late filing fee of up to ₹5,000 and may limit carry-forward of losses.
