UPI Expansion Goal: 1 Billion Transactions a Day
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has set a bold target—India should reach one billion UPI transactions per day within the next two to three years. During a high-level review meeting in New Delhi, she emphasized the urgency of building interoperable and global frameworks to accelerate UPI’s international adoption.
Stakeholder Collaboration and Strategic Focus
The meeting brought together top officials from the Finance Ministry, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Sitharaman urged all stakeholders to collaborate more actively. She directed them to:
- Onboard more users and merchants
- Improve infrastructure
- Enhance cybersecurity
- Strengthen the user experience
To prevent future disruptions, she also instructed the NPCI to reinforce the robustness of the UPI system.
Rapid UPI Growth in India
The Finance Ministry reported strong growth in the UPI ecosystem. Between FY 2019–20 and FY 2024–25, UPI transactions grew at a compound annual growth rate of 72%. From FY 2021–22 to FY 2024–25:
- 26 crore new users joined the platform
- 5.5 crore merchants were added
- UPI now has around 45 crore active users
In FY 2024–25 alone, transactions reached ₹261 lakh crore, showing a 30% year-on-year increase.
Driving a Digital Payments Revolution
With this ambitious target, the government aims to further deepen financial inclusion, strengthen the digital economy, and position India as a global leader in digital payments.
