Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Inaugurates GST Bhawan in Udaipur, Launches ICETAB 2.0 for Customs Operations

Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, inaugurated the GST Bhawan, a new official complex of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Udaipur Commissionerate under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), on August 23, 2024, in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Event Highlights:

  • Dignitaries Present: The event saw the presence of Shri Manna Lal Rawat, MP (LS); Shri Chunnilal Garasiya, MP (RS); Shri Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Chairman, CBIC; along with other senior CBIC members and officers from CGST Udaipur and Jaipur zones.
  • Economic Significance: In her keynote address, Smt. Sitharaman emphasized the economic importance of the Udaipur Commissionerate, which operates in a region known for the production of zinc, lead, silver, cement, fertilizers, and tires. She commended the timely completion of the GST Bhawan project, which was executed within budget despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Infrastructure Development: The Finance Minister highlighted the Government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure for GST Zones and Commissionerates, underscoring the importance of providing quality facilities for taxpayers and sufficient workspace for staff.

Key Announcements:

  • Synergy Between Trade and Tax Officers: Smt. Sitharaman advocated for regular interactions between trade and tax officers to foster positive dialogue and address GST-related grievances swiftly. She emphasized the need for sector-wise outreach programs to identify areas needing further reform and called for a balanced approach to GST law implementation, reserving stringent measures as a last resort.
  • Launch of ICETAB 2.0: The Union Finance Minister also launched the ICETAB 2.0, a handheld device designed to streamline customs operations by enabling the real-time uploading of examination reports, thereby expediting cargo clearance processes.

Sustainable Infrastructure:

In his welcome address, Shri Sanjay Agarwal, Chairman of CBIC, highlighted the modern, energy-efficient design of the CGST Udaipur building, which complies with the Government of India’s green building norms. Strategically located in a prime area of Udaipur, the complex offers easy access to major districts within the Udaipur Commissionerate and is conveniently situated close to the Udaipur Railway Station (2.5 km) and Bus Stand (3.5 km).
