Tourist Taxi Owners Under GST Scanner for Non-Registration

The commercial taxes department has issued notices to nearly 250 tourist taxi owners for failing to register under the Goods and Services Tax (GST). These notices are specifically targeting operators who own more than four taxis. The department started issuing these notices three months ago and continues to expand its scrutiny.

Key Findings:

Single Large Owner: Authorities have identified one individual who owns 14 taxis, raising further questions about unregistered income.

GST Threshold: Taxi operators are required to register under GST if their annual income exceeds ₹20 lakh. It is estimated that owning five taxis would typically generate income exceeding this threshold.

Cross-Departmental Investigation:

To ensure compliance, the commercial taxes department is working closely with the transport and income-tax departments. They are investigating the total number of taxis registered, including tourist, yellow-black, and rent-a-cab vehicles, and cross-referencing this information with income tax filings to identify discrepancies in tax payments.
