In December, just before the advance tax deadline, the income-tax department sent out over 44 lakh letters to taxpayers regarding missing transactions in their filed returns, according to Nitin Gupta, Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), as reported by TOI on Monday.

Gupta, who was in the city for the valedictory event of the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT), particularly highlighted the substantial growth in tax revenue over the past decade. Referring to data from 2013-14, he pointed out a significant increase in both gross and net collections in 2023-24, correlating with a notable rise in the number of filed returns.
