The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) remains hopeful that the Centre will grant GST exemptions for gurdwara purchases, despite facing what they describe as a “non-responsive” attitude from the government. SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar expressed optimism ahead of the GST Council meeting on August 5, where the possibility of exempting religious organizations from GST will be considered.

The SGPC has raised this issue with key figures including Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, and even the Prime Minister and President. Capt Amarinder Singh had previously advocated for this exemption on behalf of religious organizations during discussions with Jaitley.

Badungar emphasized that taxing religious institutions is both ethically and constitutionally inappropriate. He also touched upon the issue of rare manuscripts and books from the Sikh Reference Library, which were confiscated during Operation Bluestar in 1984. He urged the Centre to return these valuable Sikh treasures.

In other developments, the SGPC plans to set up a memorial to honor Sikh freedom fighters at the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Additionally, the SGPC will welcome UK Parliament member Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi during his visit to the Golden Temple and has announced a ₹1 lakh reward for cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur for her outstanding performance in the World Cup.

Key Points:

  • GST Exemption Plea: SGPC remains optimistic about a positive outcome on their GST exemption request.
  • Sikh Treasures: SGPC urges the return of confiscated Sikh manuscripts and books.
  • Sikh Memorial: Plans are underway for a memorial to honor Sikh freedom fighters at the Cellular Jail.
