Over 20K Taxpayers Still Evade GST, Says Commercial Tax Department

By: Admin | July 20, 2024 | Categories: GST Recent News

Despite being six years into the GST regime, data from the Commercial Taxes Department indicates ongoing non-compliance among taxpayers. A total of 23,374 taxpayers have persistently reported turnovers below Rs 20 lakh for over three years, with 19,277 of these failing to file their returns since registration.

Key Findings:

  • Turnover Discrepancies: Thousands of taxpayers have reported turnovers under Rs 20 lakh for extended periods.
  • Non-Filing of Returns: A significant number of taxpayers have not filed GST returns since their initial registration.

Special Drive Initiative:

Starting July 15, the department launched a 10-day special drive to tackle these discrepancies. The initiative includes:

  • Enhanced Scrutiny: Increased monitoring of transactions to detect tax evasion.
  • Data Analytics: Utilizing data from e-Way bills and unregistered entity transactions to identify cash transactions bypassing the GST framework.
  • Stricter Measures: Implementing tougher measures to enforce compliance and rectify discrepancies.

Addressing Evasion:

The department’s focus is on ensuring compliance and cracking down on practices aimed at avoiding GST obligations. This special drive is part of a broader effort to enhance tax collection and maintain the integrity of the GST system.
