The GSTN has issued Updated Advisory No. 535 on October 17, 2024, regarding the hard locking of auto-populated Input Tax Credit (ITC) in GSTR-3B. This feature, which will restrict changes to auto-populated ITC in the return, will be implemented at a later date following the complete rollout of the Invoice Management System (IMS). A separate advisory will be released addressing concerns raised by businesses regarding IMS before locking is enforced.
Currently, GSTR-3B is pre-filled to minimize errors, with tax liability sourced from GSTR-1/GSTR-1A/IFF, and ITC from GSTR-2B. Taxpayers have the ability to amend outward supplies via GSTR-1A and manage inward supplies using the new IMS system.
From January 2025, it is expected that auto-populated liability from GSTR-1/1A/IFF will be locked, requiring corrections through GSTR-1A. However, ITC locking will take place after ensuring that all IMS-related issues are resolved.
