A major extortion scandal involving GST officers has emerged in Bengaluru, leading to multiple arrests by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) and Bengaluru West Police. Among those detained are a Superintendent from the Central Tax, South Commissionerate, and Senior Intelligence Officers from GST Intelligence, Bengaluru Zone. These officials face serious accusations including extortion, illegal arrests, and unauthorized raids.
The controversy began with a complaint filed by Keshav Tak, a resident of G.M. Palya, Bengaluru, on September 1. Tak alleges that on August 30, a group of five individuals, including a woman, masqueraded as officers from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Enforcement Directorate (ED). They reportedly raided Tak’s home, forcibly confiscated his mobile phone, and detained several associates—Pawan Tak, Mukesh Jain, and Rakesh Manak Chandani—without legal grounds.
The complaint further claims that the impostors demanded Rs 3 crore, resorting to physical assault when the money was not forthcoming. They eventually settled for Rs 1.5 crore. The detainees were released only after being coerced into signing documents under duress.
This incident underscores troubling concerns about the abuse of power within tax enforcement agencies. The ongoing investigations aim to shed light on the full extent of the misconduct.
