In a move aimed at enhancing transparency and data accuracy in India’s services exports, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued Trade Notice No. 02/2025-26 dated April 21, 2025, introducing a new mandatory field in the eBRC (Electronic Bank Realisation Certificate) format — ‘Mode of Export of Services’, effective from May 1, 2025.
This update applies to all eBRCs generated on or after May 1 and is relevant for exporters certifying eBRCs linked to IRM (Invoice Reference Numbers). Exporters must now specify the mode under which their services were exported while completing the certification process.
Background and Legal Reference
This update builds upon earlier notices — Trade Notice No. 12/2024-25 and No. 33/2023-24 — which enhanced the self-certification process of eBRCs. The new field aligns with definitions provided under:
Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, and
WTO’s General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS)
Understanding the Four Modes of Services Trade (as per WTO GATS):
Why This Matters:
Improves granularity of services export data
Aligns India’s trade data systems with WTO global norms
Enhances policy formulation and export incentives targeting
