In a first, the Centre and the West Bengal government have jointly introduced biometric-based Aadhaar authentication centers, known as GST Suvidha Kendras, to strengthen the GST registration process and tackle fraud. The initiative, launched on August 5, aims to prevent fake registrations and fraudulent input tax credit (ITC) claims.
Key Highlights:
- Pioneering Initiative: West Bengal is the first state to implement these GST Suvidha Kendras, with 32 centers established across the state, operated by both central and state GST authorities.
- Impact in Other States: The Bengal model follows Gujarat’s implementation, where GST registration applications dropped by 23% after the introduction of Aadhaar-based systems.
- Progress in Bengal: Since the launch, over 800 registration applications have been processed, with 450 successfully verified, indicating strong early adoption.
- Fraud Prevention: Sharwan Kumar, Chief Commissioner of CGST, Kolkata, emphasized that this move will significantly curb fake invoices and inadmissible ITC claims, ensuring a fair environment for genuine taxpayers.
