The CBIC releases a Handbook of GST Law and Procedures for Departmental Officers.
Introduction of GST and Achievements: The Goods and Services Tax (GST), introduced on 1st July 2017, has unified India’s indirect tax system, doubling taxpayer numbers to 1.4 crore and recently achieving collections surpassing ₹2 lakh crore.
Purpose and Development of GST Handbook: The GST Handbook, created by a dedicated team, aims to help departmental officers understand the CGST Act, 2017 and related rules, ensuring uniform implementation of GST laws and procedures.
Content and Structure of the Handbook: Organized into 14 chapters, the Handbook provides a simple ‘how to’ guide on GST’s legal and procedural aspects, covering important elements of the CGST Act, 2017, and IGST Act, 2017.
Utility and Non-binding Nature: The Handbook serves as a guide to enhance officers’ efficiency in performing their tasks, though it is advisory and not legally binding. It aims to offer the most updated information on GST laws and procedures.
Acknowledgments and Future Updates: The initiative acknowledges the contributions of various committees and officers. The Handbook is designed to adapt to future GST changes, and feedback is encouraged to improve future editions.
