The Gujarat government announced the success of its pilot project for Aadhaar-based biometric authentication in reducing fake GST registrations. Since the project’s launch in November 2023, there has been a significant 24.3% decrease in GSTIN applications, dropping from 2.02 lakh (November 2022 – June 2023) to 1.52 lakh (November 2023 – June 2024).

Key Highlights:

  • Reduction in Applications: The implementation led to a substantial drop in GST registrations, indicating the effectiveness of the authentication process in deterring fraudulent activities.
  • Verification Process: SGST officials noted that over 6,600 suspicious applicants avoided visiting GST Seva Kendras due to the fear of getting caught. Suspicious applications are flagged, and applicants are required to undergo in-person verification.
  • Inauguration and Expansion: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated 12 GST Seva Kendras in Gujarat on November 7, 2023. Following the project’s success, the 53rd GST Council meeting decided to expand GST Seva Kendras nationwide.
  • Collaboration: Both CGST and SGST officials collaborate at these centers to ensure thorough verification and curb fraudulent registrations.

State Finance Minister Kanu Mehta, during his visit to the Ahmedabad GST Seva Kendra, emphasized the importance of the project and reviewed its functioning. The initiative’s success in Gujarat sets a precedent for its implementation across India to enhance the integrity of the GST registration process.
