The West Bengal Finance Department will launch a year-long GST awareness campaign in FY 2025–26. The goal is to bring more businesses under the GST framework and boost tax revenue.

Commercial Tax officials state that the campaign aims to increase GST collections through better compliance. In FY 2024–25, West Bengal collected ₹46,893 crore in GST—an 11.43% increase compared to the national average of 9.44%. While this is slightly above average, the state believes there is scope for more improvement.

To achieve this, the department plans to address business registration challenges and improve understanding of GST rules. Officials will also simplify the process to encourage new registrations.

GST registration is mandatory for businesses making or selling products with an annual turnover of ₹40 lakh or more. For service-based businesses, the threshold is ₹20 lakh. Those with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore can register under the composition scheme.

In FY 2023–24, the department monitored 6.85 lakh registered businesses. Among these, 54,500 opted for the composition scheme. In FY 2024–25, 40,000 new businesses registered under GST. However, 44,000 businesses had their registrations cancelled the previous year.

Cancellations often occur due to incomplete applications or missing documents. Many business owners remain unclear about the required paperwork.

To resolve these issues, the Finance Department will engage directly with affected businesses. It also plans to work with trade associations to boost GST awareness and clarity.

Moreover, the department will intensify its efforts against businesses that deliberately avoid registration to evade taxes.
