Bharat 6G Alliance Recommends Extension of PLI Scheme to Boost Mobile Device Manufacturing

The Bharat 6G Alliance has proposed extending the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for mobile devices until 2030 to strengthen India’s domestic manufacturing for 6G devices. The current PLI scheme, which is set to conclude in 2025-26, has already benefited global players like Apple and Samsung, as well as local EMS companies such as Dixon Technologies.

The working group, comprising representatives from organizations like the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), C-DOT, and IITs, also recommends maintaining disincentives on imported mobile phones to boost local production. Additionally, they propose creating a design-linked incentive scheme to reduce dependence on Chinese ODM players.

Key Takeaways:

PLI scheme offers 4% to 6% incentives with a budget of Rs 45,000 crore.

Aim to increase 6G patents tenfold by 2030, generate 100 SEPs, and establish new radio technologies.

Proposal to attract large brands and foster collaboration between EMS and design houses to strengthen local production.
