Central GST Officer Caught Accepting Rs 1.25 Lakh Bribe

In a significant development, the Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) apprehended Mohammad Rizwan Sheikh, a superintendent at the CGST Audit department in Ahmedabad, for accepting a bribe of Rs 1.25 lakh. He was caught alongside Inspector Kuldeep Mulchand Kushwaha and middleman Bhumikbhai Bharatbhai Soni.

The bribe demand stemmed from an alleged error in the 2019-20 financial accounts, with the officials requesting money to settle the matter. Acting on a complaint made to their toll-free number 1064, the ACB conducted a sting operation, catching the officials red-handed.

In another related case, journalist Mahesh Langa was arrested by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch for his alleged involvement in a GST fraud case. The case involves a network of 200 fraudulent firms engaged in large-scale GST evasion by passing bogus input tax credits, causing substantial losses to the exchequer.
