FM Nirmala Sitharaman Calls on IT Department to Address Tax Refund Delay
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on October 4, 2024, urged the Income Tax Department to promptly address a complaint regarding a delayed tax refund. A citizen raised the issue on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that his wife had been awaiting a refund of ₹52,000 for the financial year 2023-2024. Despite multiple follow-ups, the refund had not been processed, prompting the user to share his concerns publicly.
The complaint included a screenshot of an email sent to the IT department on September 17, 2024, detailing the delay. Sitharaman responded to the post, asking the department to look into the matter. While the user received a call from the department five days ago, no refund had been issued yet.
This isn’t the first time Sitharaman has called for improvements in tax administration. She has frequently emphasized the need for a “faceless, fair, and friendly” approach to tax assessments. The minister has also advocated for making tax notices simpler and more understandable to ensure that taxpayers are not intimidated by technical language.
