The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against a Superintendent and an Inspector of the Principal Commissionerate of Central Tax, GST Hyderabad Commissionerate in Basheerbagh, for allegedly extorting a bribe of Rs. 5 lakh from a complainant. The accused were reportedly harassing the complainant by threatening to impose Goods & Services Tax (GST) for certain alleged irregularities.

Key Highlights:

  • Bribery Allegations: The GST officers allegedly demanded and accepted Rs. 5 lakh from the complainant to avoid imposing GST on his business. They further demanded an additional Rs. 3 lakh to reopen a seized iron scrap shop.
  • CBI Investigation: The CBI conducted searches at two locations in Hyderabad, recovering incriminating documents. The investigation is ongoing.
  • Related Case: In a separate incident, Hashmukh Chhanganbhai Rathod, a former Superintendent of Service Tax in Nadiad, was sentenced to five years in prison for accepting a bribe of Rs. 2,000. He was caught red-handed by the CBI in 2014, and after a lengthy trial, the court sentenced him accordingly.
