The Goods and Services Tax (GST) compliance in Telangana has significantly improved, rising from 68% to 82% over the past six months. This improvement is attributed to better monitoring and efforts by the Commercial Taxes Department.
Key Points:
- Target Compliance: The Commercial Taxes Department aims to achieve 90% compliance by the end of the month. Commissioner T.K. Sreedevi emphasized the need for trade and industry cooperation to enhance revenue collection through voluntary tax remittance.
- Awareness Programme: An awareness programme on GST registration and benefits for small traders and manufacturers was organized by the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) in collaboration with the department.
- Registration Drive: Joint Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, Samyuktha Rani, announced a 10-day GST registration drive. Businesses with a turnover of ₹20 lakh and those involved in inter-state supplies are required to register.
- Non-Compliance Issues: Findings reveal that many taxpayers remain under the composition scheme for over three years, with 19,277 taxpayers not filing returns since registration. Some businesses have cancelled registrations but continue operations, and non-compliance is notably high among accommodation services and lease rentals.
- FTCCI Recommendations: FTCCI plans to submit recommendations on GST and direct taxes to the government. The Chairman of the GST and Customs Committee appealed for the turnover threshold limit for GST registration in Telangana to be increased to ₹40 lakh, aligning with other states.
