The Income Tax department has issued a demand of Rs 143 crore to Yamini Jadhav, a legislator from the Shiv Sena party, and her husband Yashwant Jadhav, covering the period from 2018 to 2022. The couple has appealed this demand with the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal since April 10, 2024.

Yamini Jadhav is contesting as the Sena’s candidate for South Mumbai against Arvind Sawant of the UBT Shiv Sena. She has disclosed detailed information regarding her and her spouse’s liabilities to the Returning Officer of the South Mumbai parliamentary constituency in accordance with the Election Commission of India’s regulations. The Income Tax department initiated an investigation into the Jadhav couple when they were associated with the UBT Sena. However, the probe did not progress further after they joined the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde.

In response to whether any other liabilities are in dispute, Yamini Jadhav has stated that she filed appeals against income tax demands for the years 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21 on April 11, 2024, amounting to Rs 1.65 crore, Rs 1.2 crore, and Rs 4 lakh, respectively. Similarly, Yashwant Jadhav has filed appeals for the years 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21, totaling Rs 75.4 crore, Rs 40.4 crore, Rs 5.6 crore, and Rs 18.6 crore, respectively. While Yamini filed her affidavit on April 8, 2024, both she and Yashwant filed appeals against income tax demands for the last four years on April 10, 2024.

It was discovered that three years ago, the Income Tax department had approached the Election Commission of India, seeking Yamini Jadhav’s disqualification for allegedly providing false information in her assembly election affidavit. However, no action was taken. Both Yamini and her husband, a former Chairman of the BMC standing committee, were under investigation by various authorities including the Income Tax department, Registrar of Companies (ROC), and Enforcement Directorate. Notably, Yamini faced scrutiny in 2020 when the Income Tax department randomly selected her 2019 assembly election affidavit, where she had declared assets worth Rs 7.5 crore and her husband’s wealth was valued at Rs 4.6 crore. At that time, she had disclosed a loan of Rs one crore from a private firm, which was later revealed to be a shell company based in Kolkata. Yashwant was implicated in several multimillion transactions, especially during his tenure as BMC standing committee chairman
